gtk2 fails to build - libXdamage wrong version

After gtk2 builds its objects, at the final link stage
I get this error:

i686-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1: /usr/X11/lib/libXdamage.1.1.0.dylib: No 
such file or directory


libXdamage does exist but not this version.

After this error message is displayed there is one final error:
