Yes, you should be able to do so. If you get the message that the  
port command cannot be found, then you need to fix your PATH  
environment variable to include /opt/local/bin and /opt/local/sbin.  
The MacPorts installer takes care of this for you, except that there  
was a bug with the 1.6.0 installer such that it did not do this. So  
if you originally installed MacPorts via the 1.6.0 installer, that  
would explain the problem.
