Thanks. In the meantime I tried gnucash, and it fails with the same
dbus-related issue. How can I make sure dbus is running? I have the
following two dbus processes running:

$ ps aux | grep dbus
dragos 58115 0.0 0.0 2446912 788 ?? S Mon10AM 0:00.00
/opt/local/bin/dbus-daemon --nofork --session
messagebus 55 0.0 0.0 2435448 732 ?? Ss Fri03PM 0:00.01
/opt/local/bin/dbus-daemon --system --nofork

What else should I see? How can I find out more about what dbus is doing/not
doing right?

thanks,
iulian
