If you're on ppc, I can't explain why it would be trying to do anything for i386. What are the values of build_arch and universal_archs in macports.conf? Are you trying to install any ports universal?

Note that Tiger is considered old at this point, and it wouldn't be unexpected for a port to fail to build. However, in this case, we haven't even gotten to trying to build the port yet, and I don't quite see yet why.
