FTP cd problems with MC

I have recently updated to version MC 4.8.1.3 on max OSX using macports and ftp
no longer works properly. Connections seem to work but changing directories
often fails, and am having all kinds of erratic behavior. I have seen this on
more than one server. In one case I had a system adminstrator on the phone with
me and he was seeing all kinds of weird things, like the wrong user or user ID
being submitted.

Is anyone else seeing problems like this?

I am deeply troubled. MC has been exclusively and reliably been my
FTP client for over 10 years and it is now pretty much useless for
such.
