Atlas compiling causes havoc

I have been trying to upgrade all outdated ports for three days now. Bumped
into several issues. Now I got stuck at Atlas. After working on building
atlas for about 12 hours I had to cancel it. Then I tried again this
morning. Three hours down the line and still no go. I could run nothing
besides Atlas being built. Opening Chrome froze both Chrome and the
terminal. The terminal was using 1.5 GB memory!! Restarting the terminal
made the terminal go wild and use ± 1.7 GB to 2 GB memory and freeze on me.
I decided to reboot. Then I could run the terminal again, but as Lion
decided it needed to index all files on my MBP I had to wait. Then the
terminal hanged again. I did a forced reboot. The terminal started again
and hanged. I killed it and sent an error report to Apple as suggested.
Spotlight then started indexing again. It did not indicate how much time
was needed.
I decided to check what I need Atlas for in the first place using the
Xquartz terminal as I was too afraid of getting bogged down using the
regular terminal:
bash-3.2$ port echo depends:atlas
DSDP
octave
octave-devel
qrupdate
scamp
sextractor
shogun

checking out what these port were used for I could not find anything
relevant I have been working for. What I need to run is MySQL5, Apache2,
PHP5, Ruby on Rails, PHPMyAdmin and if I sometimes use Gedit, and Wine, but
I can live without it.

My question is. Do you think I can dump Atlas and all its dependencies?
