gimp palettes inaccessible

I have gimp installed through Macports under 10.6.8.  The tool palette on the left is ridiculously narrow and I can't find a way to resize it.  Palettes like fill with pattern come up under the main tool palette so I can't use them at all.  I don't know whether my x11 has gotten messed up or what.  I just updated everything this morning.  Any ideas?
