Where should non-macports sw be installed? (Was: Problem with Macports, homebrew, and ghostscript)

Where in the world did you get this idea? Firstly, all that Stow does is make symlinks from a place where the software is actually installed to another (like /usr/local) where it's convenient to access and run. Homebrew is much more like Macports in that it can download the most recent version of a software package, compile it, test it, install it in a unique destination and *then* symlink it to /usr/local. Not to mention that Homebrew is Ruby and Stow is Perl-based. 

If you had said that homebrew is a ripoff of Macports, or rather, a reinvention, then you'd be closer to the mark.
