can't start mysql56 after move datadir

Since I cannot get mysql server to run, from

  /opt/local/lib/mysql56/bin/mysqladmin variables | grep socket

I obtain output:

/opt/local/lib/mysql56/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql56/mysqld.sock' (61)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/opt/local/var/run/mysql56/mysqld.sock' exists!

The same thing happens if I try to execute "sudo port load mysql56-server". Evidently mysql is never starting with my non-default datadir location.
