Comment:

 A fix for the first problem has been committed in r5042.

 In my environment, your test on a big file (/usr/share/dict/words) runs
 about the same speed as Ruby 1.8.7 (1.8.7 is a little bit faster, though).

 Please give it a try and re-open the ticket if necessary :)
