 I discovered a workaround of my own but it is a bit involved. I am using
 VMWare Fusion to run a virtual machine with Snow Leopard Server (it can be
 done without the server version - google around) and Xcode 4.0.1
 installed.

 I am opening a project in both Lion and Snow Leopard Server at the same
 time and I am using the Snow Leopard server virtual machine to connect the
 IB outlets and actions. I can then use Lion to code and test and the file
 builds without errors.
