Paul,

You need a tokend for the Gemalto card in use for the card to appear in Keychain and be used by Mac OS X Apps using native Security APIs (i.e. Keychain APIs). 

If you are using the Gemalto PKCS#11 Library then a card would not appear in the Keychain, but would be usable by PKCS#11 based applications.

On the flip side....
Note that with a supporting Tokend for a card you are using, the card could also be used within  a PKCS#11 based application (i.e. Firefox) without a PKCS#11 library by using the PKCS11Shim provided in Mac OS X (first developed via MacOSForge Project).  If you have this, point your PKCS#11-based application to use the following:
/usr/libexec/SmartCardServices/pkcs11/tokendPKCS11.so
