You’re trying to store the certificate directly from the Mac via the common UI system?

I’m not sure if it’s work.

Common scenario are more to manage smart card writing from a CA operator workstation then consume it from your clients.

Regarding Firefox/Safari API to access Smart Cards, it works through the Keychain API. So the SmartCards is only seen as an other keychain like the login or system one.

I’m not sure that Firefox/Safari UI will allow you to select your target keychain…
