Yes & Yes.
By default, any PIV-based Smart card is automatically supported by macOS Sierra using the New SmartCardServices — CryptoTokenKit Token for PIV included in macOS Sierra.
Hopefully, you all are already quite familiar with the CLI commands related to SmartCardServices & Security:
Configure Legacy SmartCardServices Instructions
$ man SmartCardServices-legacy
Configure New SmartCardServices Instructions
$ man SmartCardServices
(Note case of letters for man pages)
