Hm.. What about "xinput test 2" ? You should see lines of the form:

motion a[0]=xxx a[1]=yyy a[2]=0 a[3]=0 a[4]=0

Do you see anything other than zeroes for 2, 3 and 4 when you use a  
tablet?
