Almost there!  One last command:

bbyer$ xinput test 2

That's on my MacBook Pro with no tablet attached -- if you have a  
tablet attached and use the stylus, you should expect to see non-zero  
numbers for a[2]-a[4] when you touch the stylus to the pad.
