I realized I could use good old text by going into ~/Library/Mail/ 
Mailboxes/... and reading the file raw with less.

I will definitely file a bug with Apple.  I don't care it if won't  
display the SVG, but crashing is wholly unacceptable.  Thanks for  
pointing me at the problem.
