this didn't actually prevent the server from starting, did it?  You  
still get your xterm... just your font cache isn't generated...

Also, I notice the code type is x86_64... I built fontconfig with all  
archs because libs in Leopard are supposed to be all archs (ppc,  
ppc64, i386, x86_64) and I just didn't strip out the 64bit versions  
from the executables.

What happens if you run the i386 version?

ditto --arch i386 /usr/X11/bin/fc-cache fc-cache-i386
./fc-cache-i386 -v
