Hmm... now I have a stuck shift key, but only for non-letter keys.  
I.e. typing:

abc,./;'[]\

shows this in the xterm:

abc<>?:"{}|

How bizarre. Pressing shift doesn't fix it either. I had to restart  
X11. :(
