Are you using git's xorg-server-1.4-apple branch or are you using the
1.4.2-apple23 tarball?

No. glproto-1.4.9 is the X11R7.4 version of glproto:

DBUS and libintl are not needed to build the xserver. If you try to
build the xserver with fink in your environment, I will not support it
because it is known to cause problems (the ones you are mentioning)
due to version mismatches.
