I don't need to do cmd-c if that last preference is enabled.

You should not need to hit cmd-c then.  Try this xpbproxy:
http://people.freedesktop.org/~jeremyhu/xpbproxy-20081016.bz2

That has all the bugfixes from the past two days rolled into it, so  
maybe that's part of your problem.
