So X11_Legacy shows your emacs issue still?  If that's the case, then it definitely sounds like this is a client issue and not a server issue.

Based on the above info, that really isn't necessary.  You can install 2.6.1 then remove then /usr/X11R6 symlink, then install X11_Legacy and setup fink to use /usr/X11R6 instead of /usr/X11, but I don't know if fink even supports building against the old Tiger X11 any more.
