Often all that one wants to do is add a new port to the index, or update a single port's entry in the index. `portindex` should provide a way to accomplish that more quickly than rebuilding the entire index. This causes distnames containing spaces to be completely unavailable (causes a Tcl error), causes distnames containing a percent character to probably not download at all (probably not a common need), and causes distnames containing a plus character to work sometimes but not others, at the whim of the web server (since a plus should really be encoded as %2b the web server is completely within its right to not know what we're asking for). Overriding prefix in the MacPorts Portfile (either directly or just overriding --prefix in configure.pre_args) doesn't work as MacPorts' configure (via MP_PATH_SCAN) will now ignore /opt/local, not your true MacPorts prefix. Hence it can pick up stuff installed in your true MacPorts install. This is best demonstrated by installing MacPorts to an alternate path (for this example, /mp), and installing the tcl and curl ports. Now, if you just run the configure phase on the MacPorts port, you'll see {{{ checking for Tcl configuration... found /usr/lib/tclConfig.sh checking for existence of /usr/lib/tclConfig.sh... loading checking for Tcl public headers... /usr/include checking for tclsh... /mp/bin/tclsh checking for Tcl package directory... /mp/lib/tcl8.5 checking whether tclsh was compiled with threads... yes checking for curl-config... /mp/bin/curl-config checking for curl_easy_strerror in -lcurl... no }}} Note that it now picks up the tcl and curl from your initial MacPorts install because you've overridden what it thinks of as prefix, and hence doesn't ignore the original install's prefix. Using newsrc file /Users/martinsmith/.jnewsrc-localhost for server localhost. Connecting to host localhost ... Failed to initialize server Reason: 502 Remote access denied. slrn fatal error: Failed to initialize server. Problem is that they are both on the same machine, yet I can connect to leafnode on the mac from slrn on a bsd box on the same local network with no errors. I can also connect slrn on the mac to leafnode on the bsd box. I am guessing this is a leafnode problem, but I may be wrong.
