Cross compiling with the i386-elf toolchain?

I'm trying to learn cross compiling out of curiousity for an idea I'm playing with at work. I have a powerbook G4 (ppc) with the i386-elf port for GCC and binutils installed. I'm trying to compile a simple "hello world" application that just has a single printf. In a terminal I type: i386-elf-gcc-3.4.3 -c main.c and I get the expected main.o now I type i386-elf-gcc-3.4.3 -o hello main.o and I get: /opt/local/lib/gcc/i386-elf/3.4.3/../../../../i386-elf/bin/ld: crt0.o: No such file: No such file or directory So my problem is linking. I've exhausted my google abilities and knowledge. I think I need something like: i386-elf-gcc-3.4.3 -o hello main.o -I/opt/local/i386-elf/include -Wl, -nostdlib but so far I cannot figure it out. If someone will help me figure out a simple "hello world" cross compile recipe for these tools I would be most appreciative. Thanks David

MacPorts is soliciting new committers. If you have written or maintained ports, and are interested in commit status to keep those ports up to date, please send email with the subject "Request for commit access" to <macports-mgr(a)lists.macosforge.org>. In doing so, please also tell us: - What ports you have written or worked on (output from "port echo maintainer:your-email-here" is always helpful). Or if you have filed bugs for ports that have not yet been committed, please reference the bug #'s. We recognize that our existing committer base cannot always respond appropriately to the change load required for ports, and are asking you, our users, to step in and respond. In return, we want to be more accepting of new committers. Note that we see policing of committers as a community responsibility. If you feel that the the committer for a port is not responding properly or wisely, please email the committer, and if you get no response, apply to adopt the port. James

Hello, I am rather new to Darwinports and cannot figure out how to add various build options when installing new ports. For example, how do I instruct port install command to build Sylpheed with GnuPG and SSL support? Thank you. -- Robert

Can't Self Update

Hello, I've been trying to get darwin/mac ports workin so I can get rails going on my new mac (had it about 2 weeks, normal windows dev, can get around linux fwiw). I originally installed from the 1.3.1-1 DMG file from darwinports.org. Install seemed to go ok, however when I tried to selfupdate, it failed. I went back to darwinports.org, which had transitioned to macports.org by this time. I then downloaded the 1.3.2 tarball, built it, and installed it. Again, seemed to work fine. However, it just can't selfupdate. I've been getting the same error everytime, with the DMG build, and the one I built from source. I did a system software update Friday night and tried again, with no different results if that makes a difference. Here's a console session with my error: Seans-Mac:~ seanh$ port -v MacPorts 1.320 Entering interactive mode... ("help" for help, "quit" to quit) [Users/seanh] > quit Goodbye Seans-Mac:~ seanh$ sudo port selfupdate Password: Error: /opt/local/bin/port: selfupdate failed: Couldn't sync dports tree: sync failed doing rsync Seans-Mac:~ seanh$ I've tried the command dozens of times thinking it might be busy servers. font problems in ghostview & gv

I'm new to OS X and especially this whole macports / darwinports thing, however my first impression was, "wow, that was easy"! However, things didnt work out so well in the end. It appeared that I was able to install ghostview & gv (using port) with no apparent problems. However, I cant view any .ps files which have text in them because I always get an "invalid font" error. I'm using basic built in fonts like Courier and Helvetica. I've used the same exact postscript syntax to call those fonts for well over a decade and never had a problem from a variety of unix/linux flavors... My understanding was that these were core fonts that were part of every postscript interpreter, which is why we always used these basic fonts. So anyways, I guess I was wrong. Anyone have an idea of how to get these (or any fonts) working? THANKS! Rob
