Greetings - I would like my Portfile to create new directories and set system wide environment variables. Can anyone showl me the right way to do this or point me to an example? Thanks! Mike

Postgres82 startup broken

I've just installed postgresql82-server (8.2.4) and discovered a problem with the instructions and startup script supplied. How do I communicate with the port maintainers? My problems are as follows: ---------------------------- 1. At the end of the installation, the following message is displayed in my terminal window: To create a database instance, after install do sudo mkdir -p /opt/local/var/db/postgresql82/defaultdb sudo chown postgres:postgres /opt/local/var/db/postgresql82/defaultdb sudo su postgres -c '/opt/local/lib/postgresql82/bin/initdb -D /opt/local/var/db/postgresql82/defaultdb' The first two commands worked fine. When I executed the "sudo su postgres -c '/opt/local...'" line, after entering the admin password I would get the following error notification: su: /dev/null: Permission denied Eventually I got around the problem by instead entering the command: sudo -u postgres bash -c '/opt/local...' which worked. (This is probably a little convoluted as "sudo -u postgres /opt/local..." should work too, I think.) -------------------------------- 2. In a similar fashion, the automatically installed file /opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports/postgresql82-server/postgresql82-server.wrapper had "su" lines which didn't succeed in starting up the postgresql server. When I changed the lines from: su postgres -c "${PGCTL}... to sudo -u postgres ${PGCTL}... my postgresql server would be running after a reboot. Frankly, I don't quite understand why the original version failed and my version succeeded. I'm sure I know just enough to be dangerous. -------------------------------- I'd appreciate it if someone could verify that the startup instruction and wrapper file are incorrect, or tell me that they are correct and that I had done something wrong. Hello, i have a small problem. I have just installed MascPorts, and tried $ man port but received No manual entry for portgroup even though $ port help suggested to See man pages: ... can anyone help me understand why the manual pages are missing? Thank you. Alexey.

You're welcome. We released 1.4.0, 1.4.1, 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 within the span of about two weeks, but I think we finally got most of the kinks worked out. You probably don't have to run selfupdate too frequently. If you're subscribed to the mailing list, you should get the release announcements; when you get one, then you can run selfupdate to get that release. Or you can run selfupdate once a month or so just to check. Or run it when you run into other random errors, to see if it fixes them, before asking the list. "sudo port sync", on the other hand, is probably a good thing to run before you run any other port commands each day, so that you have the most current version of all the ports.

py-scipy chokes trying to install umfpack

I'm trying to install py-scipy on an intel MacBook runing OS X 10.4.9 . The install seems to choke while swig is trying to do something with umfpack; it can't find umfpack.h . Any tips on what I should do? rb-rails broken?

Am I doing something wrong with this command? I'm using a current port version. Why is it even looking at /Applications, etc? darwingports -> macports migration headaches

Hi all, I have been using Darwinports for a year or so now without any problems. I recently decided I'd have to bite the bullet and upgrade so I did a sudo port self update I tested a couple of sudo port upgrades which went well and so, emboldened I decided to do a sudo port upgrade outdated This didn't go without errors. I am attaching a file of errors mostly from attempts to install pkg-config. The first time around checksum fails. Verifying checksum(s) for pkgconfig Error: Checksum (md5) mismatch for pkg-config-0.21.tar.gz etc. Then it gets really strange when with each attempt at install, macports seems to append yet another pkgconfig directory to the source dir to look for the tar.gz file. Starting with /opt/local/var/db/dports/distfiles/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkg-config-0.21.tar.gz (which is wrong) and finally ending up with Could not open file: /opt/local/var/db/dports/distfiles/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/pkgconfig/p kgconfig/pkg-config-0.21.tar.gz Any ideas on what this is? Also when I try to port uninstall the old ports I still get dependencies against new ports, which they should have. For example: sudo port uninstall ruby @1.8.4_2 ---> Unable to uninstall ruby 1.8.4_2, the following ports depend on it: ---> rb-sqlite3 ---> rb-sqlite3 ---> rb-rubygems Here one of the rb-sqlite3's is the old one which has been uninstalled. The rb-rubygems is the new active port which shouldn't have dependency on the old version of Ruby. Is it safe to use the -f flag to uninstall an old port? -or- will it remove all dependents even though they are newer? I'd appreciate any explanation of what's going on and how I might fix it. newbie questions, initial setup of courier imap

I just installed courier-imap on mac os x. It is only running via ssl and not on port 143. Where is that configured? Also all I want it to do is access a single Maildir directory and let me access it via IMAP. The documentation seems surprisingly sparse, am I missing somethign obvious here? I can't even find where it tells me where to set up a new account. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me out, Rick Gigger

MacPorts.org trac theme width

Hi, This is minor nit, but that persistent horizontal scroll bar has been nagging me when viewing the MacPorts website. Do the elements of the theme sum to a width greater than 100%? Resizing my Safari window does nothing to alleviate the fact that the web pages remain just a bit width than the browser window. Chris
