MacRuby on the iPhone

Hi folks, I'm new to the list, but I checked the archives and I don't *think* what I'm suggesting here has been suggested/done before. I've been putting some effort towards getting MacRuby going on the iPhone. After reviewing the GC situation, it seems like using the Boehm collector and simply pointing CoreFoundation's default allocator at it would be a good solution to get things up and going. Cocoa seems to use CF's default allocator for a default calls to alloc, so I think this covers most allocations that you'd expect to see. Also, since you can bind free() to NULL when creating an allocator, it seems like you can largely negate the effect (if not the performance hit) of Cocoa-internal autorelease pools releasing all of your resources. I've managed to produce an armv6 build of Boehm and an armv6 build of the macruby libraries. I've also talked macrubyc into spitting out ARM executable code (by just tweaking the LLVM target). Anyway, I figured before I went much further I'd express my intent and make sure I haven't duplicated too much of anyone else's work. Does anything I'm suggesting sound totally crazy? -- Jon

problems implementing a NSEntityMigrationPolicy?

Hi, I'm having trouble implementing a NSEntityMigrationPolicy. Has anyone used subclasses of NSEntityMigrationPolicy in macruby successfully? 0.6 and Garbage Collection (or lack of same)

Is there something fishy with the garbage collection in 0.6 ? I'm using 2010/01/26, and the garbage just seems to pile up. Running the following code will make memory usage go straight through the roof, until SIGSEGV is received. def get_digest(file) digest = Digest::MD5.new() fil = File.open(file,'r') while(!fil.eof?) l = fil.read(READ_BUFFER_SIZE) break if l.nil? digest << l end fil.close() digest.hexdigest end I've tried various "tricks", such as setting l=nil, l="", etc, but it just seems to pile up just the same. I'm running it on a bunch of 0.5-2gb files, and it rarely gets more than 3-4 of them done before crashing. ruby 1.8.7 performs this task as expected. I'm not reporting this as a bug until i'm sure it's not "working as intended"

OpenGL/GLUT Bridgesupport

Hi, I'm back to using MacRuby again and I'm confused about Bridge Support. I have been using the excellent sojaster port of the Cocoa OpenGL example to help develop an OpenGL playpen. However, when I started using glut calls (glutBitmapCharacter, glutStrokeString, etc) I started to get problems. It seems that the OpenGL glut.framework (10.6.2) doesn't include bridge support. I've tried using gen_bridge_metadata to add bridge support but without success. Should glut work in MacRuby? How does one add BridgeSupport to the Apple shipped frameworks? Sorry if I have missed some very obvious step. regards and thanks, Jonathan

Getting involved in MacRuby development

Hello MacRuby development team, I am contacting you to have more information about how to be involved in the development process. I have been hearing about MacRuby for many months and I want to have a more proactive role in the project. As far as my abilities go, I have been using Cocoa for many years and am currently working with Ruby on Rails at work, during the day. I have no prior experience with LLVM, but learning about it for a real-world project is a great motivation for me to get up to speed. I read that the 0.6 branch was merged into trunk last week-end, so I am not sure if I am coming in at the right moment. I would be glad to try to fix some bugs for the final 0.5 release. If you have anything in particular for me to start on, I am up for it. Thanks a lot for your feedback and your help, Maxime

problems building MacRuby

I decided to grab the latest copy of MacRuby and build it (on an 8-core Mac Pro, running OSX 10.5.8). I downloaded, built and (I think) installed LLVM, but MacRuby's rake says it can't find it: % rake (in .../MacRuby/MacRuby) The llvm-config executable was not located as /usr/local/bin/llvm-config. Please make sure LLVM is correctly installed on your machine and pass the llvm_config option to rake if necessary. I tried looking for it with find(1), but had no luck there. I also dug through LLVM's logs, makefiles, and readmes, trying to determine where it might have put the files. After several minutes of this, I gave up. I realize that there may be something wonky with my configuration, but I still think that it should be possible to build and install MacRuby without going on a snipe hunt. NSOpenPanel error

Hi, The following is using a macruby build as of today. I'm not sure, but I seem to be experiencing a debugger error while attempting to work with a NSOpenPanel. The second time I create a NSOpenPanel no error is reported. Thoughts? #575: Bug in Cocoa bindings for NSTableViewColumn + NSArrayController -----------------------------+---------------------------------------------- Reporter: ninh@… | Owner: lsansonetti@… Type: defect | Status: new Priority: blocker | Milestone: MacRuby 0.5 Component: MacRuby | Keywords: -----------------------------+---------------------------------------------- When an NSTableViewColumn has a subclass of NSTextFieldCell as its data cell, and when the column is bound to an NSArrayController, then when I add data to that array controller, it is expected that the arrangedObject of the array controller will set the datacell's objectValue property accordingly. The latter only seems to work for NSMutableDictionary strangely (maybe other cases too, but have only tested this one in particular) but not for other custom objects. When querying for the objectValue from within my subclass of NSTextFieldCell, I do however see that objectValue is set to an object of the right type, but its object id keeps changing during the draw cycle: I don't think that should be the case either as the objects in the arraycontroller should correspond to those in the datacell's objectValue. Also, objectValue's properties seem to be nil.
