There should be a way to wait on a condition variable for a bounded time. A typical use case is as follows: There is a background thread which performs some cleaning function every x seconds. We also want to be able to tell the thread to clean now, or to exit (i.e. quitting its main loop so that we can join the thread). This thread waits on a condition variable for x seconds, and then checks whether there was a timeout on the wait, or whether the wait as signaled. In case of the former it will run the cleanup code. In case of the latter it'll check whether @quit is set, and then either stop the loop or run the cleanup code. This support for bounded waiting should be implemented by supporting an extra 'timeout' argument in ConditionVariable#wait. In fact JRuby and MRI 1.9.2dev already support it, though differenly. The call seqs are as follows: {{{ MRI <= 1.9.1: ConditionVariable#wait(mutex) No native support for bounded time waiting. In Phusion Passenger we emulate this with timeout.rb which is very hacky, though it seems to work. MRI 1.9.2dev: ConditionVariable#wait(mutex, timeout) => integer Waits for at most 'timeout' time. 'timeout' may be a floating point number. Returns the number of *seconds* spent waiting. So even if it actually spent 3.5 seconds waiting, it'll either return 3 or 4. There is no way to check whether the wait was signaled or timed out, you have to guess based on the time waited. JRuby: ConditionVariable#wait(mutex, timeout) => boolean Waits for at most 'timeout' time. 'timeout' may be a floating point number. Returns true if condition was signaled, false if it timed out. }}} I think the JRuby approach makes most sense. We should also convince the MRI developers to change the behavior to match JRuby's before 1.9.2 is released. This was fine when all the binaries were prefixed with "mac", but that change has been reverted. Installing any gem binaries with macgem now overwrites the ones previously installed by MRI. Hello, this is a "I've written a blog post" mail, so if you don't like those, it's safe to skip this one. ;) After struggling a good few hours with building self-contained MR apps by reading MR-devel and some pages on the intertron, I came out victorious; my app seems to be working. Knowing my attention span, I've decided to write a short blog post about it right away. http://blog.zottmann.org/post/347512473/xcode-macruby-embed-compile-fix It deals with embedding, compiling and using install_name_tool. It's certainly not revolutionary, but since blog posts about MR development are still kind of sparse, I don't think it'll hurt, either. My class's initialize not called

I'm sure this is an elementary question, but I have the class below. In IB, I set several NSTextField controls to this class. Everything works in the blah, blah, blah part, but strangely enough the puts "initialize dctf" never seems to be called. Hi guys, I just noticed that in 0.5b2 on Snopard, > Pointer.new_with_type("v") (void) results in a > Assertion failed: (Ty->isSized() && "Cannot getTypeInfo() on a type that is unsized!"), function getTypeSizeInBits, file TargetData.cpp, line 397. > Abort trap error. Unfortunately I need a void-type pointer for `SecKeychainAddGenericPassword` calls. Any ideas about what I am doing wrong or how to work around this issue? The macruby interpreter reported 20-30 seconds, and the same is true for the binary made by macrubyc. I understand this isn't a bug, and you probably want a stable macruby before you look at stuff like this but i just thought i'd throw it out there. I'm far from an expert at submitting tickets so sorry if this is vague, etc.. I'm trying to benchmark MacRuby on the Alioth Shootout programs ( http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/ ). The first is binary-trees.rb as I've posted at http://gist.github.com/282386 Running binary-trees.rb with an argument of 20 (as is done in the Alioth shootout proper) results in MacRuby chewing up 3GB of memory in just the first minute, whereas 1.9.1 makes solid progress and doesn't go above about 300MB. This may or may not be a leak (it may just be an inefficiency in MR somewhere.. How to get handle from Dispatch::Source::DATA type source?

Hi guys, So, now that GCD sources are supported (go Ernie!), I just thought I'd play with a simple echo server example in MacRuby: require 'socket' q = Dispatch::Queue.concurrent m = Dispatch::Queue.main hostname = "localhost" port = 25000 s = TCPServer.open(hostname, port) src = Dispatch::Source.new(Dispatch::Source::READ, s, 0, q) { |src| client = s.accept # XXX Would like to actually get this from src, rather than grabbing the server socket object directly client.puts(Time.now.ctime) client.puts "Closing down, Bunkie!" client.close } m.run The line with the XXX is the issue I'm trying to figure out. If I look at src.handle or src.data, I end up getting an integer which looks like a fd, not the original TCPSocket instance I passed in, which means I can't call the accept method on it. Is there some secret to getting at the original handle? Thanks! - Jordan
