Behaviour when local variables pointing to non-auto-retained objects go out of scope?

I just purchased the book Programming Cocoa with Ruby, and am working through the examples using Macruby. This tiny app works fine in rubycocoa, but in macruby the created statusbar item immediately disappears. {{{ #!/usr/bin/env macruby framework 'cocoa' class App def applicationDidFinishLaunching(aNotification) statusbar = NSStatusBar.systemStatusBar status_item = statusbar.statusItemWithLength(NSVariableStatusItemLength) image = NSImage.alloc.initWithContentsOfFile("stretch.tiff") raise "Icon file 'stretch.tiff' is missing." unless image status_item.setImage(image) end end NSApplication.sharedApplication NSApp.delegate = App.new NSApp.run }}} I assumed this had to do with garbage collection because in obj C status_item would have to be retained, and so I changed "status_item" to "@status_item" and then it works fine. However while playing around with it I also noticed that if I leave status_item as a local var and add a "sleep 1" at the end of applicationDidFinishLaunching, it also works fine and the status item never disappears. So now I'm not sure whether there is a bug or not. In general, what is the intended behaviour of Macruby with local variables referring to objects that would have to be retained in obj C when said variables go out of scope? Problem with (Ruby) bindings

I'm not sure if this is a known bug, or related to any open issues with bindings, but I found this while messing around (using r3059): # This works lv1 = 1 lv2 = 2 lv1_binding = lv1.send(:binding) lv2_binding = lv2.send(:binding) # This fails. class A lv1 = 1 lv2 = 2 lv1_binding = lv1.send(:binding) # lv1_binding gets assigned OK lv2_binding = lv2.send(:binding) # This is what fails end Assertion failed: (bind != NULL), function rb_binding_new, file proc.c, line 228. Abort trap I haven't poked into it much as it's unlikely to see much use. It might not be restricted to local variables, and I haven't had it fail by sending other methods (but I haven't tried many). Bitfields and arrays in structures

Hello all, I'm new to MacRuby so please bear with me. Yesterday I was going through the buglist and happened upon bug #280 (https://www.macruby.org/trac/ticket/280 ) "NSNumber#decimalValue cant convert to ruby object". I created an objective c file to print out the method signature and I got this: {?=b8b4b1b1b18[8S]}16@0:8 (The ? would be replaced by NSDecimal_ when in MacRuby) The initial problem is happening inside of RoxorCompiler::convert_type (compiler.cpp) which doesn't handle the _C_BFLD type. Upon some further testing, it also doesn't handle the [8S] part (array of 8 short), which is also bug #178 (https://www.macruby.org/trac/ticket/ 178). So it seems like I need to add bitfield and structure array support. My question is, how is all of this supposed to be represented. I assume the arrays part can just be ArrayType, while we probably want to treat a bitfield declaration as just a regular structure, i.e. typedef struct { signed int _exponent:8; unsigned int _length:4; // length == 0 && isNegative -> NaN unsigned int _isNegative:1; unsigned int _isCompact:1; unsigned int _reserved:18; unsigned short _mantissa[NSDecimalMaxSize]; } NSDecimal; would be interpreted as typedef struct { signed int _exponent; unsigned int _length; // length == 0 && isNegative -> NaN unsigned int _isNegative; unsigned int _isCompact; unsigned int _reserved; unsigned short _mantissa[NSDecimalMaxSize]; } NSDecimal; The only problem I see with this is that we have to convert back to NSDecimal packing on return. Maybe it would be better to have a ruby class that provides accessors to the NSDecimal similar to Boxed (or modify Boxed to handle this situation). Just looking for a little bit of guidance, -Steve
