Problem with redirection running wish script from Xquartz Menu

I'm running Mac OS X Mountain Lion Version 10.8.2 on a mac mini intel based. When I run my tcl script from an xterm command line it works fine but when I run it from the finder or the Xquartz menu it does't work. The problem seems to be redirection of stdout. The following statement is where it fails: YEAR=`/usr/local/bin/xprompt.tcl -P "Enter Year(YYYY)? " -D "$THISYEAR"` The statement works fine from the command line of an xterm but doesn't work from the Xquartz menu or the finder. Redirection of stdout doesn't seem to work from the Xquartz menu or the finder. This same script works fine under linux. Any ideas? 186,000 MPS isn't just a good idea, It's the law. Daniel W. I am still running 10.6.8 with 2.7.4, so I cannot see if it would help my situation here. To explain: My builds of Pan (from the git.gnome.org/pan2 repo) seem to suddenly "disappear" for no apparent reason. For a long time (many many months), there was indication that Pan had "lost" the X11 socket (under /tmp/.X11-unix/). I believe there were no crashreports created when this occurred (I can't find any). My sense was that when Pan was online, it was busy fetching binary NNTP postings from its download queue; when Pan was offline, however, I had no idea what could cause it. Funny thing that my other X11 apps were _still_ running, even other Pan tasks (with different $PAN_HOMEs), and the socket itself had *not* been really "disappeared". ;/ Lately, tho, the Pan project has new code now, but it still "disappears". Now I can see a "Bus error" or "Segment trap" on its Terminal, and a crashreport does get generated -- seems to be inside a GNU TLS call (the project has had SSL support, if the NNTP session can do it, added recently). This occurs even with it offline, totally in the background (hidden and/or minimized), with me not needing to worry about it. And again other X11 tasks stay alive (altho mostly offline, too). I am doubly bewildered now. ;\ I filed a bugreport against Pan, but it never dawned on me that this could be a X11/XQuartz related thing. So, I have become desperately interested in the above update (DL1605), please. (But I will investigate to see if GNU TLS has an update. [BTW: My research indicates that the version 3.x, needed for certain functionality in Pan, is not available with either MacPorts or Fink. I did report this fact to the list, in a roundabout way, and I thought Jeremy said he might be able to get it added to MacPorts at least. Check for X11 Updates broken?

I am surprised this hasn't been mentioned on the mailing list yet, but the "Check for X11 Updates..." functionality has been broken in Xquartz for awhile now. Whenver, I start Xquartz 2.7.4 under 10.7.5 with the latest security updates and select the "Check for X11 Updates..." menu item from the Xquartz X11 menu, the system log shows... Oct 20 14:04:42 MacBookPro org.macosforge.xquartz.startx[415]: Oct 20 14:04:49 MacBookPro org.macosforge.xquartz.startx[415]: /opt/X11/bin/xinit: XFree86_VT property unexpectedly has 0 items instead of 1 Oct 20 14:05:55 MacBookPro X11.bin[380]: Sparkle Error: An error occurred in retrieving update information. Please try again later. Oct 20 14:05:55 MacBookPro X11.bin[380]: Sparkle Error (continued): The request timed out. Have you tried to do a re-install? No, that doesn't seem to be the problem... I didn't set it, nor does it appear to have been placed there. Thanks!! Any other suggestions? I reported the bug but have not heard anything... yet.

XQuartz no longer working after Mountain Lion Upgrade

Hi, After my computer installed new updates, my XQuartz no longer works. I uninstalled and reinstalled but this did not help. I am using Mac OS X 10.8.2. When trying to open XQuartz, I get the following error: Dyld Error Message: Library not loaded: /opt/X11/*/libfreetype.6.dylib Referenced from: /opt/X11/*/libXfont.1.dylib Reason: Incompatible library version: libXfont.1.dylib requires version 15.0.0 or later, but libfreetype.6.dylib provides version 13.0.0 Thanks, Missy

I want to just make sure I have my concept of how this all works together. 1. The X-server handles the window events and internal workings of the window. 2. Xquartz layer glues the Aqua to the Xserver 3. from the exports in the Xplugin, we are able to create window frame handlers in the AppleWM. 4. From what I can tell is the the AppleWM is what draws the frame around the window. 5. The Quartz-WM then controls the behavior. how close am I to all of this?

Jeremy, On that Official thing: I am labeling where you point to go as Official. The spam website bots got into this a while ago. You want to sit down and do any research, and this makes life annoying and etra confusing. I got the M4's. had to to a port upgrade to get them to function. guess this is a known issue. Makes you feel like an idiot though... When I ran "Make", i got some warning @ main.m:135, main.m:146, utils.m:110, x-screen.m:307. Typical or is it an issues I am having? I am also assuming that when I do the install of the manager, it will override the current window manager in Xquartz. Am I correct? Per the Xplugin, is there a manual with a list its exports?
