 Who wrote the original set of patches - is there a site somewhere for the
 version MacPorts uses?

 If I can't convince the original patch author to add '-d' back in, I'll
 take a crack at it.  I might use the code from the version you linked to
 so the '-d' option is actually useful (rather than just a placeholder to
 maintain compatibility with apps like ABCDE.)  Is there no interest in
 using that version for the port instead?
