Think I figured it out with some forensics; somehow, it seems the  
10.5.5 Combo Update didn't work right on this machine(!).  That  
explains why this machine is MUCH worse than the others.  My  
apologies.  (This machine started as Tiger, was upgraded to Leopard  
(bad idea) and then Archive and Installed with Leopard again.)
