What is being output to the system.log during this process?  (Check  
Console.app)

Well, you should be fine with tcsh using 2.3.2_rc5.

Maybe I should put a 'cd $HOME' in startx...

Please open bug reports for these issues and include samples of the  
program in the bad state.
