Interestingly, once I get past the initial startup slowness, the  
xserver seems to overall be a bit faster.  New windows are created  
nearly instantly and repaints seem to be faster, particularly with  
remote apps displayed back over the internet.

I'm not sure where to even begin looking to help you with the startup  
sluggishness.  FYI, I'm on a 4-core 3GHz Mac Pro.
