Jeremy,

I found the bad apple. I remembered that I had some problems with wacom 
drivers and Mac OS X updates - I just let wacom uninstall all preferences and 
files / repair permissions / restart and new install of the up to date driver 
and both tablets work fine.

So no bug in X11 - grr why can't those people write better upgrade scripts.
