Correct.  rc3 now removes leftover files.  See https://www.xquartz.org/releases/XQuartz-2.8.0_rc3.html:

	"Installer will no longer leave remnants of older versions of XQuartz when doing an upgrade install."

Do you have need of it?  I recall the main reason I didn't include is was because I had some issues actually building it and just didn't put effort into investigating the problem since I thought nobody had every adopted it.
