The Darwin8 and Darwin9 branches will still build a ppc slice by default. If you want to build trunk (Darwin10 support) for ppc, you can just override the ARCHS variable. In fact, you can override any of the settings like this (in case you want a different PREFIX, LIBRARY_SEARCH_PATHS, or whatever). $ sudo xcodebuild install DSTROOT=/ ARCHS="i386 x86_64 ppc" Note that Darwin10 + ppc support are untested. Build System Changes

Just a heads up... I am switching the build system from make to Xcode. This is being done to make it easier for me to maintain the code in a way that works for both Apple and the public at the same time. Once I commit the changes, I will update the installation instructions, but it should boil down to replacing "make && make install" with "xcodebuild install". The makefiles will remain in place for the time being and should continue to work for the most part. If you are interested in seeing darwinbuild work on non-Mac platforms, I'll accept patches to keep the Makefiles up to date. Also, I will be creating branches for Tiger and Leopard that start with the last working revision. This should help people find the latest bits for "old" versions of the OS. I may backport critical changes to them, but mostly they will be static (and remain Makefile based). As usual I will take patches to keep them up to date. The primary focus will remain on trunk with the latest OS. If you use MacPorts to install darwinbuild, the changes above will eventually get synced with the port, but that won't happen till next week probably. Thanks -Bill

Debugging libraries

Hi, How do I build a version of a library, say libdispatch, that has all the symbols and debugging information and source code so I could step through it with gdb? I tried building libdispatch and dittoing it into /. It only has one target RELEASE but it's Build Variants specify normal, debug and profile. So I set the DYLD_IMAGE_SUFFIX to _debug. This seems to give me the function symbols, but not the source code. Thanks, David

Problem building apache and pcre

I'm running OSX 10.6 (10A432) and trying to build 10A432 apache using darwinbuild svn revision 594 (latest as of this writing). The apache Makefile contains this line: --with-pcre=/usr/local/bin/pcre-config \ None of the roots put this file into the build environment (and it is not in OSX 10.6 either), and I can't seem to see a pcre root in the list of 10A432 projects. Furthermore, OSX's native Apache httpd binary links against /usr/lib/libpcre libraries. Is pcre supposed to be part of Darwin but isn't? Cheers, Tony

Darwin 10 Status Update

I have added some redirection functionality that helps keep Xcode project builds inside the build root. It is still not 100% since a lot of processes during a build execute with a clean environment. I am slowly making my way through the project list making notes of what builds and what fails. We still have about 292 projects which fail for one reason or another. At this point, feel free to file tickets against what does not build. Make sure you are running the latest rev of trunk as we are changing it often right now. For finding missing dependencies, you can load all of the project roots in one environment and use "darwinxref findFile <file>" to see what project it comes from. Patches to fill out the missing dependencies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Bill

Snow Leopard Support Status

We have plists and roots for 10A432 and 10B504. We are only missing 2 roots, IOFWDVComponents and Libmx, and hope to have those builds fixed soon. I added libdispatch to the plists, but you will have trouble building the project due to missing Block_private.h. Until we package up something "official", you can find Block*.h at llvm.org: http://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/compiler-rt/trunk/BlocksRuntime/Block_priv… As for building the projects yourself, a quick first pass showed 301 failures. I'll be investigating those over the next week or two and hope to have most of them cleaned up soon. At this point, if you try to build something and it fails, I already know about it, so please hold off on flooding the ticket system for now. Thanks -Bill

Hello! Do I need Snow Leopard and Xcode Tools 3.2 in order to build Darwin 10A432 and above, or should this be possible with Mac OS X 10.5.8 + Xcode 3.1.4 on a PPC machine, i.e. PowerBook G4? Best regards Rolf Jansen
