"port lint" exists to tell you about things that are wrong with your portfiles (errors) and things which could be improved about your portfiles (warnings). The patchname check is a warning, not an error.

an error message during complie of gnome-sessions said : Warning: constructor for GnomeCanvasBPath [or GnomeCanvasXxxx for several diferent things] refer to live.gnome.org/ PyGTK_2fWhatsNew28#update-constructors which however was a 404 error. Help: Adding System Accounts

I am trying to roll a setup for a server that cannot use MacPorts. How do I go about adding users. I have played with the dscl command and have create users that do not show up under the System Preferences > Accounts but my group wont stick when I go to chown the home directory. Any ideas? #12824: add py-boto as a dependency for duplicity

Why a "test" variant?

In the sbcl port I see this code: default_variants +test variant test { test.run yes test.dir ${worksrcpath}/tests test.cmd sh test.target run-tests.sh } Now, I was led to believe that this is silly and should be rewritten as follows: test.run yes test.dir ${worksrcpath}/tests test.cmd sh test.target run-tests.sh I was told that using "test.run yes" does not automatically run the tests. Rather, you must "sudo port test sbcl" if you want the tests. In light of this, why would anyone want to wrap this in a "test" variant? Who would ever want to switch it off? And isn't there a base bug that makes it so that if you install the port without the test variant, and then upgrade, the test variant gets turned on again? (I haven't tried it, but I thought I remembered hearing that.) But I see several ports with a "test" variant, so I wanted to ask if there's something I'm missing here.

I thought daemondo could restart stuff

So I have a perl script I want to start and keep running. I had documented the startupitem.pidfile per list feedback as shown: startupitem.pidfile This keyword must be defined properly for daemondo to be able to monitor daemons launched via script StartupItems and restart them if they die. It specifies two things: a process id (PID) file handling method, and a pidfile name and path. So I have a startupitem that created a pidfile. If the pidfile isn't created properly daemondo keeps starting more instances so I know it makes sure it starts up, but after the script is running if I kill it (to simulate the script dying abnormally) daemondo never restarts it. Isn't daemondo supposed to restart it if startup.pidfile is defined? I can't use startupitem executable for a perl script. Mark

I'm not quite sure but I think that some ports like 'mono' will break with this version of boehmgc. I didn't even know cairo had an --enable-pdf switch. I only use cairo for graphviz, and one of the features graphviz gains by using cairo is the ability to output pdfs. This has always worked for me, though I've never used --enable-pdf. So does --enable-pdf get us anything extra? I see from ./configure --help that the default for this option is "auto" so maybe for me it was automatically on and for you it was automatically off? I wonder what influences this automation. Does the pdf ability need any additional dependencies? If not, shouldn't we enable pdf all the time rather than putting it in a variant?
