THen I had a small benchmark program, and yes, it runs 2x slower than 10.5 /usr/bin/python on Mac OS 10.5.1 DEBUG: Environment: CXXFLAGS='-O2' CPPFLAGS='-I/opt/local/include' CFLAGS='-O2' but... gcc -c -fno-strict-aliasing -Wno-long-double -no-cpp-precomp -mno-fused- madd -DNDEBUG -D__DARWIN_UNIX03 -I. -I./Include -I/opt/local/include -DPy_BUILD_CORE -o Parser/parser.o Parser/parser.c (to use one example) I looked into the portfile platform darwin 9 { configure.post_args-append OPT="-D__DARWIN_UNIX03" } I think this may be clobbering the CFLAGS def. I added platform darwin 9 { configure.post_args-append OPT="-O3 -D__DARWIN_UNIX03" } and it compiles correctly (but I need to remove and then install everything). I'm pretty sure there must be a way of reading $CFLAGS from the env, but I don't know enough about TCL (I tried $::env(CFLAGS), nope) or MacPorts to know. I'm using macports without sudo and most of the time it works fine. The problem is that the directory settings in post-destroot are too strict and don't give the current user write access. I found later on that OTCL, TCLCL, and NS-2 ports use gcc-3.3 and gcc++-3.3 which are only compatible with powerpc processors for mac os x. I edited the port files and replaced the gcc-3.3 with gcc-4.0 and gcc++-3.3 with gcc++4.0, and the installation went through, but gave a warning message at the end utayba-mohammads-macbook:~ utayba$ sudo port install ns-2 Portfile changed since last build; discarding previous state ---> Fetching ns-2 ---> Verifying checksum(s) for ns-2 ---> Extracting ns-2 ---> Applying patches to ns-2 ---> Configuring ns-2 ---> Building ns-2 with target all ---> Staging ns-2 into destroot Warning: violation by /opt/local/man Warning: ns-2 violates the layout of the ports-filesystems!
