Installing php5

Hello, I want to install php5 with apache2 and mysql5 support on OSX 10.4, but I have already installed mysql5 and apache2 manually (without using macports). Is there a way to tell macports to use these installations of apache2 and mysql5 instead of installing the macport versions? Thank you! John

compiling as root?

Linux people generally recommend that you do not compile source code with a user that has superuser privileges, which I assume is a guard against possibly malicious commands that may be in the compile scripts. When I install packages with macports (sudo port install xyz) they're compiled by the root user. I assume that the developers have thought about this and decided that it is not a security problem. But I am curious, is it ok or not ok to compile source code as root? cheers

How to configure a project to compile correctly obtaining information from the portfile

Hi, I am preparing a project with GMP sources included within my project sources, so I will need to compile GMP directly without Macports support. I have tried to compile GMP from scratch, and it seems to compile correctly, but when I try to run my app, I get some problems related to weak symbols. What I saw is that no dylib is created when I compile, only ".la" file. I saw the portfile of GMP and discovered that specific configure options are given to compile GMP when installing the port. The problem is that I tried to compile GMP with those configure options and I still have the same problem. Any hint in how to read and understand the Portfile options? Thanks in advance, Aleks

Problems building PostgreSQL 8.2 on Leopard (ppc,G4)

Just wondering if anyone's encountered the same problem I did trying to build PostgreSQL 8.2 on a PowerPC G4 running Leopard (gcc 4.0.1)? cdrtools returning error on install

Hi, I was wanting some help with cdrtools. I need it to run turbojet2. When I try and install ports cdrtools It replies with this error. Error: Target org.macports.patch returned: error copying "/usr/share/libtool/config.guess": no such file or directory Error: Status 1 encountered during processing. Using svn for portfile management

Hi, As an occasional Portfile editor, I prefer to use svn to manage Portfiles than rsync because that allow me to check diffs or changelogs easily. One problem is PortIndex. Everytime I port update to get the latest port tree, I have to rebuild, which takes a long time to finish. Is there any easier way of doing this job? I'm using a bit old Mac, doing portindex everytime is not a easy job. Thanks.
