creating ports - howto

Where is the documentation on how to create ports? I sort of have an idea by looking in existing port files etc but is there a canonical doc on this? I need the port wv which is broken. There is no maintainer for it so I thought I'd roll my own. Thanks for any pointers, bakki

errors installing gv

I get the following errors when trying to install gv: # port -v install gv ... Button.c:38:28: error: X11/Xaw3d/XawInit.h: No such file or directory In file included from ButtonP.h:32, from Button.c:39: Button.h:32:28: error: X11/Xaw3d/Command.h: No such file or directory In file included from Button.c:39: ButtonP.h:33:29: error: X11/Xaw3d/CommandP.h: No such file or directory In file included from Button.c:39: ... I know that I have Xaw3d installed and those files are correctly located in /opt/local/X11/Xaw3d. It looks like /opt/local/include is not in the include path when building gv. The problems of uninstalling everything and reinstalling them later are: 1) many packages will be uninstalled and reinstalled even though they are already up-to-date; 2) in case anything goes wrong at reinstallation time, the user may be left with a system where too many things are uninstalled and they have to manually reinstall all the things (that are not affected by the package with problem). I think an easier and safer way of is to modify the logic in macports::upgrade{} such that when it tries to upgrade things in $portinfo(depends_build), $portinfo(depends_run) and $portinfo(depends_lib), for every bin/lib style dependency, it does one of the following: 1) if the bin/lib file does not exist, install the corresponding port (the port specified at the end of the bin/lib style); 2) if the bin/lib file exists and the corresponding port is installed, upgrade the corresponding port; 3) otherwise, do nothing. But again, it all depends on the macports community's attitude towards external dependencies. If the community thinks external dependencies should not be supported, it does not make sense to make the "upgrade" command correct at all, because those ports in bin/lib styles should be installed anyway. I guess I'll live with the inconsistence of "install" and "upgrade", until some day the community cannot tolerate the lack of support for external dependencies. BUG: port numpy should depend on python24

Hi there, we are currently trying to install scipy via macports on an intel Mac. When trying to install scipy, a lot of dependecies were installed, but python24 wasn't (at least at the time that numpy was built). So I guess that numpy needs a dependency on python24. I'm new to macports (used to be a debian/ubuntu/fink user), so I don't really know how to verify that and whom to contact.
