FWIW, I'd like to see the console (and any other generally-useful tools) included in the MacRuby release. The fewer hoops a newbie has to jump through, the better chance that s/he won't get Tired of the Whole Thing and bail out. In the meanwhile, I've taken an initial swipe at creating a HowTo for getting and using Antonin's Console project: https://www.macruby.org/trac/wiki/MacRubyConsoleHowTo After typing "2 + 2" into the irb session, I kinda ran out of steam, but I will try to get back to it RSN. Hi Rich, I'm using console code made by Tim Burks. I cannot imagine developing Cocoa+MacRuby without something similar. Getting from (Ruby)Cocoa to MacRuby?

The notes in http://www.macruby.org/trac/wiki/MacRubyDifferences, even if completed, would not serve as a "HowTo" for porting an app from RubyCocoa to MacRuby. If folks here will give me a hand, I'd be happy to put together such a document. On a related topic, I'm wondering about the possibility of porting conventional (ie, ObjC) Cocoa apps _incrementally_ to MacRuby. 64-bit changes in trunk

Hi, I figured out I should drop a note about the recent changes in trunk. MacRuby will now build 64-bit by default on Intel machines, 2-way fat (for both i386 and x86_64). It means that if you are fortunate to run an Intel 64-bit machine, macruby will run in 64-bit by default. On PPC, MacRuby will only build for 32-bit, regardless if you run ppc or ppc64. In the case of MacRuby Xcode apps, you will have to modify the application's Xcode project to build for 64-bit. The templates and the samples have been modified to always build 64- bit by default. In the case of a HotCocoa app, in theory a new "macrake" should rebuild the .app bundle for 64-bit. If you update from an old trunk revision, you might want to clean all objects first, or even better, start with a fresh clean repository copy. Let me know if have troubles building/using trunk. On a separate note, there is now a CoreData application template that has graciously been contributed by Johannes Fahrenkrug! Laurent

WebView History / Exception handling

Hi, I'm trying to do a little web browser in MacRuby. It's coming along nicely, but I'm having a strange problem with history. I set up a WebView and it loads, I go to a few urls, then call the back action on the WebView. The first time I do this, I get the error below and get dumped to gdb. Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'WebKitThreadingException', reason: 'void -[WebHistoryItem finalize](WebHistoryItem*, objc_selector*) was called from a secondary thread' If I type quit in gdb, it detaches from the debugger and continues. From that point I can call goBack and goForward and they work fine. Now I guess I've got two ways out of this: 1. Figure out why WebHistoryItem.finalize is being called from another thread, or 2. Add some kind of exception handling to catch this error and ignore it. I haven't really had any luck with 1, so I tried 2 (using http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2007/07/31/understanding-exceptions-a…) but I couldn't get it working in MacRuby. Can anybody point me to a way to catch uncaught exceptions in a MacRuby program? Thanks, Brad

Wait, wouldn't that mean that you would be able to hack almost anything in an existing application, including things like enabling features disabled in a trial version, disabling "please buy/please donate" popups, or just reverse-engineering it to see how it works inside?
