The machine I tried this on is a clean, new iMac, so I would have  
thought the /etc/profile should be the correct one for Leopard, rather  
than some old one hanging around. Little had been done to the machine  
apart from sticking Office on it and setting it up to use our XServe  
for home directories.

I'll try to get to the machine tomorrow and check it out.
