Ah-hah.  It had just been less than 24 hours since the last check.

Ah, excellent.  It's always useful to be able to go "I know there's a  
new version, go look for it."

Upgrade to beta5 less than smooth, but I think you already know it.  X  
stays open but non-responsive during install.  After install X closes,  
displaying the warning about open windows which vanishes too quickly  
for me to read.
