I had no chance to reproduce this stall again (sshing in works). Maybe it was a Thanksgiving Egg... Earlier that day I had installed with Software Update a few updates, including two which patched the firmware to better support Thunderbolt (MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.3, MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.5 + iDVD 7.1.2, iWeb Update 3.0.4, iMovie 9.0.4, EPSON Printer Software Update 2.9, Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.9, iPhoto Update 9.2.1, iTunes 10.5.1).

I cited this version from /usr/X11 only because it reports to use a 96 DPI instead of the real 133 DPI setting. The stalls happened with XQuartz 2.7.0 (xorg-server 1.11.2).
