OK, I agree and have decided on using this directory: /opt/local/var/db/dports/sources/http.svn.macports.org_dports for the subversion working copy, as this will avoid possible conflict with current MacPorts. Now I have a question about manual selfupdate, how do I manually update MacPorts? From reading the GettingStarted-MacPorts-Trac wiki page and snooping around darwinports tcl code, it looks like I can run subversion on http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk/base and write the working copy to /opt/local/var/db/dports/sources/http.svn.macports.org_base Then compare my working copy base/config/dp_version to MP's dpupdate1/ base/config/dp_version and if newer, then ./configure make make install Looks like a lot of repetitive work. I'm tempted to hack the selfupdate routine in my working copy of base/src/darwinports1.0/ darwinports.tcl. Brian

Chris, Thanks, I have subversion 1.4 installed and had no problem checking out the tree. Would the following amended instructions work? 1. Checkout ports tree and place in standard MacPorts location: cd /opt/local/var/db/dports/sources/ svn co http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk/dports \ rsync.rsync.darwinports.org_dpupdate_dports 2. Manually update as needed: cd /opt/local/var/db/dports/sources/rsync.rsync.darwinports.org_dpupdate svn up Seems like it would work, do you see any problems with doing it this way? Brian > 1. errors during ion3 upgrade

I'd like to report the following error (and unexpected) messages which occured during an upgrade of `ion3' (which is a _really_ nice X11 window manager (maybe the way vi is a nice editor, though)). `port selfupdate' had just been run. platform is G5 and 10.4.8. imagemagick/montage problem

hi everybody, attempting to use `montage' from teh imageMagick package with something like montage -tile 2x2 i1.png i2.png i3.png i4.png leads to a crash with the error message magick/cache.c:2385: failed assertion `cache_info->number_views != 0UL' this is with version ImageMagick 6.2.7 08/29/06 installed in the 'old' darwinports times, but this seems to be the current version, still. I tried the same with the most recent version provided via fink (6.1.8 08/28/06): there, everything runs smoothly. any ideas appreciated. regards, joerg

Can someone help? I'm behind a firewall with no rsync access, therefore I want to update the ports tree using subversion. Need pointers on how to do it, I have limited experience with cvs and subversion. Thanks, Brian

ImageMagick 6.3.0-0

MacPorts currently has ImageMagick 6.2.9-8 but I need 6.3.0-0 to get the fix for this bug: http://www.archivesat.com/ImageMagick_Defect_Support/thread1898742.htm The ImageMagick port currently has no maintainer. I'd be happy to see if I can update it to 6.3.0-0 and commit the change. Would anybody object to that? I could also take over maintainership of the port if nobody else is interested.

Trouble installing XMMS through MacPorts

Mac OS X X11 Behaviour and DarwinPorts

I seem to have done something wrong or have misunderstood how to configure Mac OS X 10.4.8 to use DarwinPorts. Although ~/.profile exists and .../xinit/xinitrc includes "source ~./ profile", only the first xterm window opened will have "/opt/local/ bin:/opt/local/sbin:" set in its environment. When I open subsequent xterm windows, I need to explicitly enter the command "source .profile" to include the path to the DarwinPorts X11 applications. On my original PowerBook G4, I had set my default shell to tcsh. I failed to do this when I acquired my PowerMac G5. The default shell is bash. Do I need to change my default shell? pgAdmin3 won't install

As the subject says, I'm having trouble installing pgAdmin3 version 1.4.3. Attached is the installation log obtained using command "port - v -d install pgadmin3". My system: MacBook (Intel), Mac OS X 10.4.8, MacPorts 1.320. As the log below shows, the error happens in extraction phase. The directory pgsql8 is missing from /opt/local/lib, but postgresql81 is there.
