Change some wording on MacPorts install page...?

I think it would be helpful to change something on Part 5 of the macports install page: http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/macports/wiki/InstallingMacPorts It says: Open a terminal window. somewhat [OT] byteswap.h

I'm trying to build something that RedHat wrote for Linux on a Mac Book Pro running OS X 10.4.8, and have come across a need for a file called byteswap.h, which appears to be a Linux-only thing. I imagine that at least one of the mac ports have run into needing a version of this file. I could invent an empty version of the file, and then fill it up with whatever the build can't find. Macports Newbie - XServe use

I am very comfortable with BSD (specifically OS X Server over the last few years) and maintain my current OS X Server primarily via command line, though I like web admin tools as well because I don't always have SSH access and I prefer to not have my impatient typing kill a server. So for the last few years I've been using iTools from Tenon on my Dual G5 server. We are moving to a new XServe Xeon in the next 2 days and I need to migrate the servers/config to that machine. I do not wish to use the Apple supplied servers because they are usually out of date and don't meet my needs. I do not wish to continue using Tenon's iTools for the same reason. I am comfortable building my own servers from source, but its been so long that I'm not completely aware of all the options and I'd rather not recompile apache 50 times because I forgot something. I was told by a friend who maintains Apple's XServes in their IT team that some of those guys are enamored with MacPorts. So great - here I am :) Here are the open source servers I run: Apache2 with mod_SSL mod_auth_dbm PHP5 MySQL 5 Subversion SFTP I would like to add Webmin to the new server since we'd not be using iTools. Right now we have Subversion using svn+ssh access (direct SVN server access), but I'd like to change that to mod_SVN. So add that to the list too :) So my questions and concerns. With Apache2 we have it use the dbm for all authentication instead of htaccess or OS X accounts. I'd like to move our SFTP over to using the same dbm instead of OS X accounts like it is now. And I definitely want MySQL 5 running as an x64 binary. The rest can run as 32-bit binaries. Of course I'd like to have it all start on startup and run in server mode. With all that said, any tips on variants/options to use with MacPorts to set this up properly? py-psycopg mix up with python version and postgresql82 -- will this screw up trac?

After a recent ports update (MacPorts 1.4.0 from the repo a few days ago), I noticed an interesting quirk. The current port for py-psycopg (version 1.1.21) requires libraries from python 2.4 (port python24) and PostgreSQL 8.2.3 (port postgresql82): $ port deps py-psycopg > py-psycopg has library dependencies on: > postgresql82 > py-mx > python24 > openssl > Yet, if you want to install postgres82 with the python variant, the Portfile for postgresql82 wants Python 2.5: variant python { > depends_lib-append port:python25 > configure.args-append --with-python > configure.env-append PYTHON=${prefix}/bin/python2.5 > } > What should one do? Is it ok for python24 and python25 to co-exist and both be active at the same time? I presume that if I install python24 in sequence before python25, then after installing python25 I can then install postgresql82 with the python variant and then go ahead and install py-psycopg to let it build against its desired libraries from both python24 and postgresql82? Hopefully this won't lead to problems because I want to later install the trac port with the postgres variant and trac can be set up to use py-psycopg Has anyone tried this out yet? How much time to wait for gcc41?

On a PowerPC G4 (1.0 GhZ) Mac, running Mac OS X Server 10.4.9, with MacPorts 1.4.0 (grabbed out of the repo a few days ago), I'm trying to build gcc41. Sorry, I didn't build with the -v option but I probably should have. Anyway, on this machine, it has been trying to build for almost six hours and has not completed. Would this be considered abnormal or is gcc41 truly that much of a beast and requires many hours? Downloading all dependencies, and compiling them later?

Dear Macports, I was wondering, is there a simple way with 'port' to download a package and all its dependencies, and then compile everything later? I have intermittent network access and this would help me a lot. Thank you. -DB

qt3-mac build failure: ranlib can't find libdesignercore.a

Hi, qt3-mac fails to build for me, complaining that ranlib can't find a file called libdesignercore.a. Does anyone have any clues for fixing this? Session output is below. I've tried it using both 4.0 and 3.3 as the system default gcc, just in case that was part of the issue, but it makes no difference to the behaviour.
